Creative concept note: This page is a portfolio-development framework and outreach exercise. It is not a completed journalism package, published series, or active newsroom production slate.
Why Portfoliana works as a concept
Since Portfoliana mirrors the real-world path of building a media portfolio while navigating WSU and local broadcast opportunities, anchoring each episode in the Wichita media landscape creates a clearer and more credible story. These concepts use local fixtures and common student-creator challenges to build a sharper pitch.
Portfolio-development concept work for tracetherater.github.io, distinct from completed reviews and published journalism.
Episode 1: "The 4 PM Deadline Grind"
The Narrative Beat: The fictionalized Trace sets a goal to land an informational interview with a real local anchor or producer to understand how a modern digital newsroom operates.
The Wichita Anchor: You target the team at KWCH 12 or KSN 3, specifically playing off the fact that KSN recently shook up their schedule by adding a brand-new 4:00 PM show. Mention KSN's 4pm expansion or KWCH morning block in outreach.
The Comedy / Conflict: Trace tries to time his arrival at the station perfectly, only to realize the sheer chaos of a live local newsroom hitting a major deadline while he's just trying to ask about his favorite video editing. Manager says: "I'll only recruit you if you build your portfolio."
Tie-in: Links to Option A outreach template — use real local story reference.
Episode 2: "The Indie Circuit Showdown"
The Narrative Beat: Desperate for real cinematic cred to improve his film credentials — Trace needs something beyond YouTube reviews.
The Wichita Anchor: Wichita indie screenings, Tallgrass Film Festival connections, or WSU's School of Digital Arts showcase. Trace volunteers as reviewer covering screening like he's an undercover critic.
The Comedy / Conflict: Trace treats a local short film premiere like it's a red carpet at Cannes. His review style (WORTH THE MAGIC?) clashes with indie filmmakers who want "serious critique."
Real-world action: DM Tallgrass organizers, offer to cover event for tracetherater.github.io — use outreach template B.
Episode 3: "The Civic Beat"
The Narrative Beat: Trace attempts to prove he can handle hard news by covering a local civic meeting or community event — city council, WSU student government, or local charity drive.
The Wichita Anchor: Wichita City Hall, WSU Student Media, or local non-profit event.
The Comedy / Conflict: Trace, used to reviewing wizards and puppets, is thrown into sheep-counting at a county fair or debating zoning ordinances. Diney & Lemey families react to "serious journalism."
Character tie-in: Diney (European) + Alyssa Suzuki-Puppet (East Asian) = 5 Wasian kids react to civic duty; Lemey + Amy = 2; Zachary Suzuki + Sadianna "Sadie" Bellefleur young couple debate civic engagement; clones Christopher Bellefleur + Emmaline Suzuki offer flipped perspectives.
Real-world action: Email City Public Information Officer using outreach template — attach tracetherater.github.io/portfolio.
How these episodes support outreach
- Each episode gives a clear reason to email KWCH, KSN, or KAKE: "I'm producing an episode about [real Wichita fixture] — may I shadow or ask a few questions?"
- Each note links back to https://tracetherater.github.io/, making the portfolio immediately recognizable and context-rich.
- The fictional world is anchored in the language and themes already established here: under-the-pillow creative energy, phone-based brainstorming, portfolio-building, and local storytelling.
